Appearance is a visual assessment of the heating system water, considering characteristics such as clarity, colour, cloudiness and the visible presence of suspended contamination or debris.
Unlike most laboratory parameters, Appearance is not normally expressed as a numerical concentration. It provides an immediate qualitative indication of the physical condition and cleanliness of the circulating water.
Ideally, heating-system water should generally appear clear or only slightly tinted, although some treatment chemicals and heat-transfer fluids may deliberately colour the water. Fernox notes that cloudy, rusty-coloured or black water can indicate contamination, corrosion products, scale or sludge within the system.

Appearance describes what the heating system water looks like.
Clean system water should normally be clear or only lightly coloured by treatment chemicals. Water that is cloudy, brown, red or black can be a warning sign that dirt, corrosion products, sludge or other contamination is present.
Appearance is important because visible changes in the water can provide an immediate indication that the condition of the heating system has deteriorated.
An abnormal Appearance result may indicate:
Black or very dark water, which can be associated with iron oxide and magnetite corrosion products.
Brown or reddish water, which may indicate rust or other iron corrosion products.
Cloudy or murky water, suggesting suspended solids, debris or contamination.
Visible particles or sediment circulating within the system.
Sludge being disturbed from radiators or pipework.
Scale or deposits breaking away from internal surfaces.
Installation debris remaining after commissioning.
Inadequate cleaning or flushing.
Residual cleaning chemicals or other contaminants.
Microbiological contamination in susceptible systems.
An unexpected chemical or fluid having entered the system.
Fernox uses the visual clarity of system water as the basis of its on-site System Water Test. If the target at the base of the test tube is clearly visible, the water is considered relatively clean; if it becomes blurred, contaminants are present, while inability to see the target indicates a heavily sludged or dirty system.
Poor appearance can therefore be associated with contaminants that contribute to:
Radiator cold spots.
Restricted circulation.
Blockages in narrow waterways.
Fouling of boiler and heat-pump heat exchangers.
Interference with pumps and valves.
Reduced heat-transfer efficiency.
Increased system noise.
Reduced heating performance.
Increased likelihood of component damage or failure.
Fernox recommends cleaning and flushing heating systems until the water runs clear because accumulated corrosion products, sludge, scale and other debris can reduce system efficiency and cause blockages.
Appearance is therefore a valuable first-line indicator of system cleanliness, particularly when considered alongside laboratory parameters such as Suspended Solids, Iron, Dissolved Iron, Copper and Aluminium.
Appearance should not normally be assessed in isolation. Clear-looking water does not necessarily mean that the system water is chemically healthy.
For example, water can appear completely clear while still having:
Insufficient corrosion inhibitor.
Unsuitable pH.
High chloride.
Elevated conductivity.
Dissolved Iron, Copper or Aluminium.
Incorrect glycol concentration.
Other dissolved contaminants.
Likewise, coloured water is not automatically evidence of contamination. Some treatment chemicals and heat-transfer fluids are intentionally coloured. Fernox, for example, supplies heat-transfer fluids that are blue, red, purple or orange depending on the formulation.
The expected appearance should therefore take account of the treatment product or heat-transfer fluid known to be present.
Appearance is most useful when evaluated together with Suspended Solids, Iron, Dissolved Iron, turbidity and other chemical results, particularly where the sample is visibly cloudy, discoloured or contains particulate material.
